Newport Harbor Watches the Boat Parade in Shifts

What time is the boat parade? For most of Newport Harbor, the official answer of 6:30 p.m. is wrong by more than an hour.

The 118th Newport Beach Christmas Boat Parade and Ring of Lights runs Wednesday through Sunday, December 16 to 20, 2026, and the Commodores Club of the Newport Beach Chamber of Commerce is hosting it again. Each night the boats leave the tip of Lido Isle at about 6:30 and get back there at about 9:00, so the 2026 route map describes a single loop of roughly two and a half hours. The Marina Park page puts the route at 14 miles, with more than 100 decorated yachts and boats taking part. Lido sees the start and the finish, the Peninsula gets the early evening, Balboa Island gets the middle, and Mariners' Mile gets the last stretch. Two drone shows sit at opposite ends of the harbor, so the order of the night changes depending on where you're standing.

Lido gets the opening and the closing

Lido is the only part of the harbor that gets the parade twice. The map's timetable puts the start at the tip of Lido Isle at 6:30, Lido Isle Yacht Club at 6:35, the Lido West Channel entrance at 6:39 and the Lido Isle Bridge at 6:45. The boats reach the tip of Lido Peninsula at the Rhine Channel by 6:49. Then they leave for about two hours.

They come back along the other side. The timetable has Lido Marina Village at 8:46, Malibu Farm and Lido Bottle Works at 8:47, HanaHaus at 8:48, Lido Park and the Lido Bridge at 8:50 and Via Lido North Genoa Beach at 8:53, with the finish back at the tip of Lido Isle at 9:00. On Lido, you can catch the first boats leaving, go to dinner, and still be back in time to see them come home.

The Peninsula gets the boats between its two drone shows

From the Rhine Channel the route follows the Peninsula's bay side, and this is where the evening gets busiest. Opening night starts before any boat leaves. At 6:15 p.m. on Wednesday, December 16, fireworks go off from the Newport Pier. At 1600 W. Balboa Blvd., Marina Park opens at 4 p.m. that night. The park covers 10.5 acres, has 177 parking spaces and is the largest public viewing spot on the route, and admission is free. The fourth annual Holiday Market, run with Vogels Vibes, goes from 4 to 8 p.m. with more than 35 local makers and food vendors.

The boats reach this stretch shortly before 7 p.m. The timetable lists Woody's Wharf at 6:51, Peninsula Village at 6:52 for Buona Forchetta, CasaDami and Shorebird, Marina Park at 6:54, the Lighthouse Café at 6:55, the American Legion Yacht Club at 6:56, 15th Street Beach at 6:57 and 10th Street Beach at 7:02. All of these times are approximate.

The drone schedule matters most around the Fun Zone. Every night, Peninsula Park near the Fun Zone has drone shows at 6:45 and 8:00 p.m. The lead boats pass the Balboa Fun Zone, the Balboa Peninsula Ferry Landing, Harborside Restaurant and the Balboa Pavilion at 7:15, and Catalina Passenger Service and Davey's Locker at 7:16. If you stand near the Pavilion, you see the first drone show, then the boats half an hour later, then the second drone show. From Marina Park to the Pavilion, the boats arrive between the two drone shows.

The official Dine & Watch list names the waterfront restaurants on this side, each with the time the parade is expected to pass:

  • Woody's Wharf, 6:51
  • CasaDami, Shorebird Restaurant and Buona Forchetta in Peninsula Village, 6:52
  • The Lighthouse Bayview Cafe, 6:55
  • Sons of the American Legion, 6:56
  • Newport Landing Restaurant, 7:14
  • Harborside Restaurant, 7:15

After the Pavilion the boats head for the harbor mouth. They pass Peninsula Point Beach at 7:25, Pirate's Cove at 7:32, Channel Reef and China Cove at 7:33, the U.S. Coast Guard station at 7:37, Balboa Yacht Club at 7:38 and Bahia Corinthian Yacht Club at 7:41.

Balboa Island gets about 25 minutes, all the way around

The lead boats reach Balboa Island about an hour and 15 minutes after leaving Lido. The timetable puts them at the Balboa Island Bridge at 7:45, Little Island Beach at 7:48, Little Island Point at 7:51, the South Bayfront and Grand Canal at 7:54, the Balboa Island Ferry Landing at 8:01, Collins Island at 8:03 and the North Bayfront at 8:07. They pass the Balboa Island Bridge again at 8:11, the same minute they pass the Newport Beach Yacht Club.

Since the route goes around the island, a spot on the South Bayfront and a spot on the North Bayfront see the lead boats about 13 minutes apart. The Peninsula Park drone show at 8:00 overlaps with the Ferry Landing passage at 8:01. On this part of the route, it's the boats and the drones at the same time across the water, and you'll be choosing which one to look at.

From the island the route heads to the upper bay. The timetable has Harbor Island at 8:18, then the PCH Bridge at 8:26, where Tavern House Kitchen + Bar and SOL Mexican Cocina sit, and Bay Shores Community Beach at 8:30.

Near the Bay Club, both drone shows come before the boats

The west end of the harbor reverses the order. The second drone show runs over the Balboa Bay Club at 6:15 and 8:15 p.m. from Thursday through Sunday. On opening night the times are 6:00 and 8:15. The timetable has the boats reaching the Balboa Bay Resort at 8:35. On Mariners' Mile, both drone shows finish before the boats arrive, and the boats come by at the end of the night.

That last stretch passes the most restaurants in the shortest time. The timetable lists Orange Coast College's crew base at 8:38, Newport Sea Base at 8:39, City Cruises on Mariners' Mile at 8:42, Rusty Pelican Restaurant at 8:43, Billy's at the Beach and Louie's by the Bay at 8:44 and The Winery Restaurant & Wine Bar at 8:45. The Dine & Watch list adds A+O Restaurant | Bar at 8:35 and GuacAmigos at 8:43. Eleven minutes after the Bay Resort, the boats reach Lido Marina Village, and they finish at the tip of Lido Isle at 9:00.

The parade's viewing page says all city parking lots will be open throughout the parade. It also says thousands of people watch each evening and recommends arriving as early as you can. If you'd rather watch from the water, Davey's Locker runs Holiday Lights Cruises from November 29 to December 31, with adult tickets at $40 and junior tickets at $36.

The other half of the event is the waterfront homes

The same timetable decides when the decorated houses along the water get seen. The Ring of Lights competition is open to every home, business and yacht club on the harbor, the Commodores Club judges it with its own categories and prizes, and entrants can appear in the live broadcast. Entry costs $35. Registration forms are due to the Chamber before noon on Friday, December 11, 2026, and judging takes place on Monday, December 14, so decorations need to be up by then. For questions about entering, the Chamber's number is (949) 729-4400.

Not many homes enter. Steven Rosansky, president and CEO of the Newport Beach Chamber of Commerce, told the Daily Pilot last year that 20 to 25 homes usually sign up. He said a house that isn't registered sometimes gets a prize anyway, but the organizers prefer that homes register, "because, this way, if they sign up and they win, they also get two free tickets to our boat parade awards reception." The 2025 results included Best on Lido and Best on Peninsula, a Green Entry Award, Hi Tech Christmas, Best Lights and Animation, a Photographer's Choice and a Mayor's Award, plus a Sweepstakes award for Best Overall. Balboa Yacht Club won Best Yacht Club.

Where a house sits on the route also sets when it's seen. A display on Lido is lit for the 6:30 start. One on the Balboa Island North Bayfront has its busiest moment at about 8:07, and one near the Bay Shores beach at about 8:30. The registration deadline is about a month from now.

At The Twinning Team, our in-house photographers and stagers spend most of the year working out how waterfront homes look from the water, and December is when the rest of the harbor sees them that way too. If you're entering the Ring of Lights this year or want help photographing your display from the bay, reach out and receive exclusive listings along with our notes on the harbor's best-lit homes.
